According to its definition by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word Networking refers to “the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions“. More specifically, “the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business“.
Networking is a very crucial part of one’s career building and it is something we must pay close attention to since it can have such a huge impact on our professional lives. Good network development can make the difference when finding a job, or from a company’s point of view, finding the right candidates. Knowing the people around us, learning from them and sharing our perspectives is nowadays necessary especially in the business and marketing field.
So what should students do in order to create substantial relationships and transform them into potential business and career opportunities? Here are some tips:
- Start networking as soon as possible – Show up and introduce yourself, share your interests and experiences and learn from others. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about career paths that excite you.
- Join student organizations – Being active and involved in student organizations can play a huge role in broadening your network. In addition, they are a fun way to gain expertise which you can add to your resume!
- Take part in Events on campus – This is the best way to meet people who are interested or already working in your field. For example, at the 2019 SFSU Marketing Expo you will meet students and alumni who have similar expertise as you. Listen to them, learn from them and let their stories inspire you in your achievements.
- Talk to professors and mentors – Professors and mentors are there to help! Share any questions or concerns you may have with them. They may directly or indirectly help you get closer to your goals. Building a good relationship with professors and mentors will also give them more of a reason to introduce you to helpful people in the future.
- Be curios and prepared – Never be afraid to ask questions or show interest in new things. Express your willingness to learn about other fields that might excite you. Be ready to answer some questions about your personal background and goals. Be sure to enjoy these professional conversations as they are the best learning opportunities.
- Personal-branding – Develop your network through different social media outlets. Engage your audience, keep your personal profile up to date, and showcase your interests. Remember, your LinkedIn and Facebook profiles are the first things to be analyzed by HR managers!
When it comes to getting a job, you should remember that “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”.
